During a summer visit, we had the privilege of being invited by our long-standing fabric partner, Cotonificio Albini, for a full-day visit to their headquarters and production site in Albino, Northern Italy. Known internationally for its dedication to fine shirting fabrics, Albini is also the home of Thomas Mason – a name synonymous with British elegance and one that has become an integral part of Christakis’ bespoke and made-to-order offering.
The visit unfolded as a journey through the history and craft of one of the world’s most respected textile mills. Walking through the weaving halls, surrounded by the rhythmic sound of looms, we were reminded of the incredible precision and passion required to create fabrics of such character and refinement. Beyond the machinery, it was the people of Albini – artisans, engineers, and designers – who brought the story of quality to life.
Each conversation revealed a commitment not only to tradition, but also to innovation and sustainability in textile production.
As consumers – and even as craftsmen ourselves – we sometimes take fabrics for granted, seeing them only as the starting point of a garment. But standing inside Albini, watching each stage of production unfold, we were reminded of the extraordinary knowledge and expertise required to bring these fabrics to life. It is in these moments that one truly appreciates the depth of craft behind every roll of cloth.
For us at Christakis, working with Albini is not simply a matter of sourcing fabrics. It is about sharing a vision of excellence. Over the years, Thomas Mason fabrics have become a cornerstone of our shirtmaking, chosen by discerning clients who appreciate the balance of heritage and modernity. From classic royal twills and crisp poplins to the luxurious 200/2 qualities of David & John Anderson, these fabrics allow us to create garments that embody Mediterranean ease with international sophistication.
One of the most memorable moments of our visit was being given access to the Thomas Mason archive, a living record that dates back to the company’s founding in 1796. Within its volumes are thousands of original fabrics and patterns, a treasure trove of textile history that continues to inspire the designs of today. To study these archives firsthand was a privilege — a tangible connection between centuries of craftsmanship and the fabrics we work with every season.
Our day in Albino was more than a factory tour – it was an immersion into a world where craft meets culture. A highlight of the experience was being invited to the presentation of Thomas Mason’s then-upcoming Autumn/Winter 2025–26 seasonal collection, staged in a beautiful winery just outside Bergamo. In an inspired and memorable way, the presentation paired fabrics with carefully selected wines, each cloth finding its sensory counterpart in a glass.
The wines came from De Toma, a limited-production winery celebrated for the rare varietals of the region, such as the Moscato di Scanzo. The result was a multisensory dialogue between texture and taste, a celebration of refinement in both fabric and wine.
We left Albino inspired, grateful for a partnership built on trust and shared values, and motivated to continue offering our clients not only beautiful garments, but also the stories and traditions that live within each fabric.
Until we meet again,
Christos
